Inflation, population growth and a shopping list containing additional public safety and recreation needs have led to Langford’s proposed property tax increase coming in at 11.8 per cent.

For the average Langford property, the 2024 tax hike amounts to $247.

Tax increases are signalled to fall over next four years, with those figures equalling 11.19 per cent, 7.87 per cent, 7.99 per cent and 4.89 per cent. Council will consider adoption of the 2024-2028 financial plan on May 6.

The additional revenue will help Langford pay for three RCMP officers, nine firefighters, three community safety and bylaw enforcement staff and the purchase of the YMCA Aquatics Facility.

The other projects being considered are the completion of the Jordie Lunn Clubhouse, Porcher Park and Centennial Park improvements, Irwin Road improvements, multi-use lanes and sidewalk infill projects.

The City of Langford has decided to move away from a previous policy decision in which taxes were kept low by the increasing use of the general amenity fund to offset increases.

Despite the high 2024 increase, the city said its municipal taxes are projected to remain among the lowest in the Capital Regional District.

Members of the public will be able to have their say on the budget at the Feb. 20 committee of the whole meeting at Langford city hall.
