LETTER: No justice for short-term rentals

It鈥檚 been interesting reading the news for the last week or two. But I鈥檓 left scratching my head. In one article, a person is caught after an alleged carjacking 鈥 and then he鈥檚 released. He goes out the next day and does the same thing. And is let go. Then he鈥檚 accused of a robbery and is finally sent to jail to await trial.

But here鈥檚 the kicker, on May 1, the province is bringing in fines of $500 to $5,000 per day for someone who rents out a home or suite as a short-term rental in an area where they鈥檙e not allowed to. So who鈥檚 the criminal here? Why is there swift and expensive justice on one hand, and a slap on the wrist for the other.

Premier David Eby calls the one doing the illegal rental a 鈥渟peculator鈥 who is admonished by the premier for being greedy. As for the other? It seems it鈥檚 just business as usual. Can someone explain the logic to me?
